Nenek Salbiah
last saturday, i went to cover an event as usual, some LUP (Lift upgrading programme) voting at clementi...mind you, clementi is one area where i am NOT familiar with AT ALL...coupled wif the fact that it was ANOTHER LUP event coverage so pretty much i went there with a storm cloud above my head.and i reached early - 1030am (in order not to get lost - my dear would've been proud of me!) and the MP came at 1+PM!! Well anyway...once again, i found the reason why i'm staying on - in journalism, i mean. and maybe to a smaller extent, the reason why i'm staying on in this company (despite every effing things!!!)...Ground journalism in fact - for the very reason that i get to meet people and know more about the stories that hide behind each face i meet.
and it was there the event became not just another LUP event bt gave me a new twist to the whole LUP saga (which of course if pen into an article, will be ultimately immediately rejected by the client). i encountered this old indian man looking humourlessly, blankly at the karaoke session played out live in front of him..looking blankly and i wonder why. So as not to disturb him in his reverie, i let him be.
and then i encountered this wonderful malay grandma, let's call her nek Salbiah - a lovely old lady who's so nice that her neighbours raved about her to strangers a.k.a me...wouldn't it be nice to be raved about one's niceness throughout the neighbourhood jst like her. and then the old indian man, Mr V came. So we started a whole mini discussion abt the LUP (what else, nid to do my job mah!)
ok stop - b4 that, there was this old Chinese man, Mr Lim, who busied himself trying to raise supports of the voters in the polling booth and it was he who told me about nek salbiah..he joined us in our mini discussion when suddenly Mr V excused himself..and that's when i found out that his wife injured herself and has since been wheelchair-bound for the past few years...without a direct lift access, his wife is in short a 'prisoner of her home'..and i guessed that goes out to all those who moves with physical pain, encountering kerbs, bumps and stairs in their daily lives...
"Its the faults of our old engineers" - one person went...
"No, its the fact that we don't think that we will get old and encounter such problems" - Mr Lim
whateva reasoning behind our lack of a smoother journey for everyone, one thing remains clear - there's suffering because of the sins of the past..bt i guess thats how the whole world works. for like in the alquran there writes "for every suffering, there will be ease"
like a north-south pole, dont u tink?
so for every resident or a stranger i meet next for my event coverage, i shall try to pin their story down for remembrance..besides, everyone do have a story to tell, don't they...abg hatta would say that for everyone you meet, they are a reflection of oneself.
